Previous Year Trends

2021

CBT Phase 1 held (December 2021 – March 2022) after prolonged delay due to COVID-19. Originally announced in 2019, exam deferred multiple times. 1.17 crore candidates registered; huge pent-up demand increased competition. Syllabus and paper pattern remained standard with moderate difficulty.

2022

CBT conducted in multiple phases (August–October 2022) for CEN RRC-01/2019 vacancies (~1.03 lakh posts). About 1.15 crore candidates appeared. Normalization of marks applied due to multi-shift exam. Cut-offs ranged from ~66–98 for UR across zones. PET held in 2023.

2023

No new Group D CBT was held. Post-exam activities (PET/DV/Medical) from the 2021–22 cycle were completed. Final selection lists and appointment letters issued to qualified candidates across railway zones. Controversy regarding normalization formula continued.

2024

No separate Group D recruitment cycle was notified in 2024. Result processing, document verification, and medical examination from the 2022 CBT cycle continued through 2023–2024. Candidates from the 2022 cycle awaited final appointment orders.

2025

RRB Group D 2025 notification (CEN 09/2025) released in January 2026 with 22,195 revised Level-1 vacancies. Over 1.08 crore applications received by the close of the extended window (March 2026), highest in recent cycles. Exam date not yet officially announced as of May 2026. Expected difficulty: Medium-Hard given increased competition.

Previous Year Analysis

1. The 2022 RRB

The 2022 RRB Group D CBT (CEN RRC-01/2019) is the most recent completed exam cycle. Analysis shows:

1. Mathematics

Mathematics was moderate in difficulty with focus on Arithmetic topics – Percentage, SI/CI, Time-Work, and Ratio-Proportion appeared most frequently.

2. General Science

General Science was 10th-standard level with Physics (Electricity, Force, Motion) and Biology (Nutrition, Disease) dominating.

3. Reasoning

Reasoning was the highest-weighted section (30 marks) and was relatively scoring – Series, Analogy, and Coding-Decoding were most common.

4. General Awareness

General Awareness included both static GK (History, Geography) and current affairs from the preceding 6 months.

5. Normalization

Normalization was applied due to multi-shift CBT, which shifted effective cut-offs.

6. Zonewise Cutoff Variation

Zone-wise cut-off variation was significant – UR cut-offs ranged from ~91 (RRB Ajmer) to ~98 (Mumbai) out of 100 raw (pre-normalization), indicating high competition in metro zones. Safe score target: 75+ (normalized) for UR category in most zones.
